5 Burro Cafe: Family-Friendly Mexican in Red Hook

5 Burro Cafe

I posted recently about Brooklyn Bridge Park‘s fabulous new Pier 6 and how local families are flocking there; I’m betting you’ve already been at least once.

It is a real destination, though, and especially appealing with its amazing water feature in this oppressive heat. So, next time you go, try going really early or late in the day to avoid maximum crowds and high temps — and tack on a meal after here.

It’s a kid-friendly Mexican spot over on Columbia Street (# 127). There’s a big, inviting garden out back with plenty of shady seating and room for kids to roam (that’s it, above). More bonuses: an extensive menu with lots of options for the younger set, margaritas for you (yes!), and an accommodating waitstaff who swooped in quickly with small toys to distract the kids while we waited for our food.

Hello, spiky little pink rooster and green froggy:

Have fun!

Got any tips on new fam-friendly dining spots? As you’ve probably noticed, we cook a lot, but are always on the lookout for places to esacpe to as well — so do tell!
