What’s on the Menu

We survived the heat wave, and happily it looks like this week will be just hot instead of damn hot.

No CSA pickup to drive the menu this week. I turned to some old back-issues of Bon Appétit & Gourmet we have saved for inspiration and uncovered some wonderful sounding desserts (Mint Brownies or Lemon Curd Mousse with Blueberries, anyone?).

Bon Appetit, 90's style

Plenty of ink devoted to Asian Chicken Salad (quite the rage back in the mid-90’s apparently) and ribs, tons of ribs!…but maybe that’s because I only pulled the July/August issues. Earmarked a few things to try (two this week).

The menu:

Sunday: Shrimp. That sounds good. I think now that it’s safe to turn the range back on it will be Sautéed with Garlic Scapes (have a couple from last week) and Spinach over Ginger-Scented Rice (inspired by a great Lemon Basmati Rice recipe from Chef Ming Tsai here– the salt & pepper shrimp in the link is great as well).

Monday: Southwestern Lime Chicken with Chipotle Sauce (adapted from a July 98 Bon Appétit) and Grilled Squash & Zucchini

Tuesday: Orecchiette with Sautéed Corn, Tomato and Basil

Wednesday: Greek-style Lamb Kebabs with Tzatiki (also inspired from a recipe in the July 98 Bon App)

Thursday: Burrito night!

Friday: Salmon, Asparagus and Hobo-Pack Potatoes on the Grill.

Saturday: Pizza on the grill, baby!

Have a great week!

Those brownies from the Aug 1997 are delicious. Had them at a bday party and have made them many times since. In fact, they came from a meal that included ribs and a fantastic corn, tomato and basil salad that I’ve made more times than I can count. Yum Yum. Tried and true summertime recipes. Thanks for the reminders.

I meant to say that the menu was all in the same Bon Appetit from Aug 97. But you prob figured that out.
