December 3 – 4: Weekend Links for Brooklyn Mamas

Santa at Macy's Herald Square

We have a long list, big guy. Hope you're up for it this year.

Hey, I never said I was working on world peace here, people.

On my humble to-do list:

* Santaland at Macy’s with the kids. Believe it. We’re there. (Via Mommy Poppins, here are more places in NYC to see Santa.)

* I got a good look at my Visa bill this week. Yeah, that sh*t was pretty scary. Better skip Anthro for a while and set my sights on more modest acquisitions, like this:

Paradisa bloom party dress from Ruche

Paradisa bloom party dress from Ruche, a mere $40. $40!

* Next color up on the fall nail polish brigade:

Chanel nail colour in Paradoxal. Bring it, baby.

* Ready to stockpile the salted caramel squares at Bklyn Larder. They freaking rule.

One more, please.

Happy weekend!

December 4 – 5: Weekend Links for Brooklyn Mamas

santa at ABC Carpet & Home

Fittingly, Santa at ABC Carpet & Home has a super fancy-schmancy robe.

The last two years, we’ve taken the kids to Macy’s to visit Santa and to get the obligatory holiday pic. While we were concerned about having to wait for ages in line, I have to say that it’s an amazingly well-oiled machine and we moved through quickly. And once you get into the “Santaland” part of the wait, there’s so much for the kids to see — trains! snow! toys! elves! — that the minutes fly by. I’d seriously recommend it. The one downside is cost — while you are welcome to snap your own photos of the kids with St. Nick, the ones Macy’s takes and you have the option of buying in many different packages, are pricey.

Still, it’s Macy’s. It’s Santa at Macy’s. It’s quintessential New York.

Anyway, all that said, this year we’re thinking of mixing things up for a change and doing Santa at ABC Carpet & Home instead. For the deets — including the fact that you take your own photo there, so don’t forget the camera — and for a great list of other places to catch Santa this season, head over to A Child Grows in Brooklyn.

We’ve got a pretty busy social schedule this weekend, so I’m not sure how much holiday eventing we’ll be able to squeeze in, but one tempting local option is the P.S. 29 Holiday Gift Fair & Pie Social that I read about on Mommy Poppins. Pie + shopping — two of my favorite things, together! While you browse handmade crafts, toys, jewelry, and more, kids can watch short films and make holiday crafts. The pie contest sounds like serious business — Gail Simmons and Francois Payard are among the panel of judges. Tasting tickets are $5. Yum.

Happy weekend!
